The term “empowerment” is a relatively new concept. It began to appear in socio-economic analyses in the 1960’s and its popularity notably increased with the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995. Empowerment can take many forms: including economic, political, and social just to name a few. It guarantees that women and girls have control over their lives and can participate actively in all spheres of society. Latin America and North America face challenges in different socioeconomic contextes but some factors remain the same: lack of egalitarian political representations as well as the absence of equal-pay laws and policies that protect native, aboriginal and indigenous women and girls still affect both regions.
